Let's stipulate that some things just go together, to wit: Reverand Jeremiah Wright and Barack H. Obama. Liberal Speaker Nancy Pelosi and liberal Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton.

Tom Perriello and George Soros.

To truly understand the NEW YORK value and belief system that George Soros is using to finance Tom Perriello's Congressional Campaign in Virginia's 5th Congressional District, you have to know what support from Soros entails. You have to know the true extent of the pay back that Soros expects from the candidates races he funds:

This is the belief and value system that New Yorker George Soros expects from Tom Perriello. Is this the belief system that Viginia's 5th Congressional District wants representing them in Washington D.C.?

Exclusive to the Contemporary Conservative. Recent research has uncovered even deeper and more questionable financial ties between New York lawyer, Tom Perriello and radical New York political activists.

It is an undisputed fact that Tom Perriello has created and received income from several non-profit organizations. Three of the organizations he co-founded- Avaaz Foundation, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, and Res Publica- are all listed on Perriello’s financial disclosure form filed in October 2007. These organizations received significant sums of money from Open Society Institute and Soros Foundation Network (OSI). Liberal New Yorker, George Soros, is the founder and current chairman of OSI.

The OSI granted $150,000 to Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good in 2005 and 2006. Perriello listed on his financial disclosure form that he received $29,600 from Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good. Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good was denounced by the Catholic League in October 2008 for its association with George Soros. The Denver Archbishop, Charles Chaput even said that Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good was doing a disservice to the Catholic Church.

In 2007, Personal Democracy reported that OSI granted $150,000 to Res Publica for the creation of the Avaaz Foundation. The Avaaz Foundation was co-founded by Res Publica and According to a 2004 Washington Post article, Soros pledged millions to so that it could easily spread its liberal agenda. In 2006, Perriello received $24,000 from Avaaz and $21,167 from Res Publica. He received $40,500 from in 2007.

In 2007, Faith In Public Life, which received $150,000 from OSI in 2005 and again in 2006, became the host to Faithful America, which was co-founded by Perriello.

Res Publica assisted the Center for American Progress in holding a meeting for religious activists in 2004. According to OSI’s website, it gave CAP $3,550,000 in 2006.

George Soros funded many of Perriello’s organizations in 2006 and 2007. George Soros and his family donated directly to Perriello’s congressional campaign. Eli Pariser, the Executive Director of donated to Perriello’s campaign as well as John Podesta, who heads Center for American Progress. Both Pariser and Podesta have served on the board of Res Publica.

George Soros funds abortion providers. He also supports reducing U.S. sovereignty. He has given thousands of dollars to Perriello’s organizations. He and his associates have given to Perriello’s campaign. These connections further highlight Tom Perriello’s connection to liberal New York agendas.

Congressman Goode has a long history of service to the Fifth District of Virginia. We need people focused on Fifth District values --- not New York values. More posts to come....stand by.

The Silencing of the Opposition Begins

From the Drudge Report:

Fri Oct 31 2008 08:39:55 ET

The Obama campaign has decided to heave out three newspapers from its plane for the final days of its blitz across battleground states -- and all three endorsed Sen. John McCain for president! ..The NY POST, WASHINGTON TIMES and DALLAS MORNING NEWS have all been told to move out by Sunday to make room for network bigwigs -- and possibly for the inclusion of reporters from two black magazines, ESSENCE and JET, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned. ...Despite pleas from top editors of the three newspapers that have covered the campaign for months at extraordinary cost, the Obama campaign says their reporters -- and possibly others -- will have to vacate their coveted seats so more power players can document the final days of Sen. Barack Obama's historic campaign to become the first black American president. ..Some told the DRUDGE REPORT that the reporters are being ousted to bring on documentary film-makers to record the final days; others expect to see on board more sympathetic members of the media, including the NY TIMES' Maureen Dowd, who once complained that she was barred from McCain's Straight Talk Express airplane. ...After a week of quiet but desperate behind-the-scenes negotiations, the reporters of the three papers heard last night that they were definitely off for the final swing. They are already planning how to cover the final days by flying commercial or driving from event to event.

If you don't see this as a assault to the first amendment, the free libertiesof America and how can can destroy a democracy you really need to study how the rule of Castro, Chavez and other socialist dictators started.....

Tom Perriello..... NOT married to a woman???

Posted by MAXIMUS

Why is Tom Perriello NOT married to a woman? Can anyone explain this? While he was in New York City, can anyone name one woman (for verification purposes) that Tom Perriello actually dated?

For that matter, can anyone provide the name of a woman (for verification purposes) that Perriello has dated in Albemarle County/Greater Charlottesville area since he returned from New York City?

Did something change Tom Perriello when he was in New York? When they meet him, do women have an internal radar that goes off and tells them "Stay away from him, he is ..... not like other men?"

Why is it that Perriello's friends in New York appear to be predominately women, platonic girl-friends, who are now returning the favor by organizing political phone banks for him?

What was Perriello's position on defining marriage as being between one man and one woman in Virginia? Or did he NOT take a position on that because he was out of state at the time----possibly clubbing in SOHO? Does anyone know the answer?

The Liberal Fascism to come....

Speak out and this happens to you(not to mention what they've done to Gov. Palin.)The liberal contempt toward the common working man (and women)knows no people think that the DEM party cares about the average American is the greatest shame, myth and travesity of the last 40 plus years. From the Columbus Dispatch:

A state agency has revealed that its checks of computer systems for potential information on "Joe the Plumber" were more extensive than it first acknowledged.....Helen Jones-Kelley, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, disclosed today that computer inquiries on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher were not restricted to a child-support system....The agency also checked Wurzelbacher in its computer systems to determine whether he was receiving welfare assistance or owed unemployment compensation taxes, she wrote....Jones-Kelley made the revelations in a letter to Ohio Senate President Bill M. Harris, R-Ashland, who demanded answers on why state officials checked out Wurzelbacher.........Harris called the multiple records checks "questionable" and said he awaits more answers. "It's kind of like Big Brother is looking in your pocket," he said...If state employees run checks on every person listed in newspaper stories as buying a business, "it must take a lot of people a lot of time to run these checks," he said. "Where do you draw the line?"...The checks were run after the news media reported that Wurzelbacher was considering buying a plumbing business with more than $250,000 in annual income, Jones-Kelley wrote...."Given our understanding that Mr. Wurzelbacher had publicly indicated that he had the means to purchase a substantial business enterprise, ODJFS, consistent with past departmental practice, checked confidential databases ," she wrote...."Not surprisingly, when a person behind in child support payments or receiving public assistance is receiving significant media attention which suggests that the person appears to have available financial resources, the Department risks justifiable criticism if it fails to take note and respond," Jones-Kelley wrote.....The results of the searches were not publicly released and remain confidential, she wrote. Wurzelbacher has said he is not involved in a child-support case and has not purchased any business.

TOM PERIELLO OUTED.....carpetbagger asks New Yorkers to harass 5th District Virginia Voters

Posted by MAXIMUS

Just when you thought 5th District Democrat Congressional Candidate Tom Perriello was a good ole' boy, here comes an email that "OUTS" him and his campaign as being addicted to grassroots campaign support from New York City.

Tom Perriello ask New Yorkers to be call residents of Virginia's 5th District...meaning Obama's New York surrogates will be harassing voters in the 5th for days...leading up to election day.

In an email sent to fellow New Yorkers today, Tom Perriello supporter Emily Weiss asked New York City liberals to come to her home to conduct a phone bank from Brooklyn NY--all under the watchful coordination of Perriello's Charlottesville staff. In fact, Perriello's staff are are advocating that “as many Tom-supporting VA-05-dwellers as possible get harassed by the Obama campaign during the last four days of the race.”

According to the email, telling these New Yorkers that you support Tom Perriello will guarantee these 5th District voters at least four phone calls from the Obama Campaign over the next few days.

Tom Perrielllo supporters should call him and the coordinator of this project, Ashleigh Crocker, and ask to be taken off the harassment list that Perriello has sent to Obama. Call them at (434) 971-1344 and demand to be taken off the list.

Now, here is the email proof. The Contemporary Conservative has obtained an exclusive email that documents Perriello's deep and dubious ties to New York, behold:

"October 30: Phone Banking From NYC to Win Virginia"

"Virginia is one of the top priorities this election. This Thursday there will be a phone banking effort in Cobble Hill to get out the vote for Congressional candidate Tom Perriello and for Barack Obama.

Tom Perriello, running for Congress in the VA-5 district against Republican Virgil Goode, may be a particularly important person for us to get into Congress because of his excellent diplomatic record. After 8 years of Bush's failed foreign policy, we need some people with excellent diplomatic skills in government to help clean up the mess. Goode is stuck in the Bush/McCain thinking. By contrast, Perriello has a record of diplomatic success in difficult regions. Back when Sierra Leone was one of the world's most violent hot spots, Tom worked with child soldiers, amputees, and local pro-democracy groups, and played a significant role in the peace and reconciliation process that ended twelve years of violence there. He then became Special Advisor and spokesperson for the International Prosecutor during the showdown that forced Liberian dictator Charles Taylor (who was also responsible for the violence in Sierra Leone) from power without firing a shot. THAT is the kind of diplomatic skill America needs after years of Bush/McCain blunders. After this success, Tom served as a national security analyst for the Century Foundation. He has worked inside Darfur and twice in Afghanistan, so he knows about the hot spots of today. This is the kind of leadership we need in Congress! He is raising record amounts of money to defeat the incumbent Republican. For me, this is a critical pick up opportunity.

Emily Weiss is setting up a phone bank to help Tom Perriello and Barack Obama in Virginia. Here is her email:

I hope you will be able to join me for a virtual phone-banking party for Tom (and Obama) this Thursday evening, October 30, between 6:00 and 8:30 p.m.
I know it's short notice, but as you may have noticed the election is coming up pretty soon, and Tom's race has gotten very close, and apparently on Friday at midnight the Obama campaign is going to freeze their get-out-the-vote universe, so up until then our calls are Very Important because we can identify voters who are leaning towards Tom and catapult them into the Obama campaign's GOTV universe, and once that happens the Obama people will call those people four more times before Election Day to make sure they don't forget to vote.

Thus, in order to make sure that as many Tom-supporting VA-05-dwellers as possible get harassed by the Obama campaign during the last four days of the race, if you show up at my apartment sometime between 6:00 and 8:30 on Thursday evening I will give you a user name, a password, a script, some talking points about all of Tom's great policies (I'll even send them to you early if you want to prep), some Halloween candy, and some beverages to keep your phone voice smoothly modulated. I live at 401 Henry St. #3, between Warren and Baltic in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn (near the F/G at Bergen St., the 4/5/2/3 at Borough Hall, and the R/M at Court St.).

If you are planning to come by, please write back to this email to let me know so that I can make sure to have Ashleigh Crocker, the Perriello campaign's lovely Volunteer Coordinator, set you up with a username and password and so that I can print out some nice materials for you ahead of time. You can also call me at 347-205-7200 if you have any questions or anything.

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

Further, to enforce that Perriello has been out of touch and away from living in Virginia's 5th District, records reveal that Tom Perriello did not pay any personal property taxes on any vehicles in Albemarle County, VA (where his Virginia address of record is located) during the following years: 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Perriello decided to pay personal property taxes on his vehicle in 2008 to coincide with his new found interest in running for Congress in Virginia's 5th Congressional District.

To quote Billy Joel, Perriello was definitely in a "New York State of Mind" for much of this past decade. Let's all welcome Tom Perriello to the 5th District of Virginia.

One last question, what do you call a grown man who isn't married, doesn't have children, and who is now openly "cruising" for election support in New York City? What's he trying to create here? SOHO on Charlottesville?

Breaking News: SBE Notifies State Police of Potential Voter Fraud

In an article by Dale Eisman in today's edition of the Virginian-Pilot, the Secretary of the State Board of Elections (SBE), Nancy Rodrigues, discloses that the SBE has turned over to the State Police information of 40 documented cases of students from Pennsylvania (who attend college in Virginia) who requested absentee ballots from Pennsylvania but also just registered to vote in Virginia!

We will be hearing much more about this.

Brian Moran, frontrunner for Democratic nomination Governor of VA, still refuses to affirm the right of Virginia Citizen Soldiers to vote

Posted by MAXIMUS

Delegate Brian Moran, the presumptive frontrunner for the Democratic Gubernatorial nomination, has yet stand up and defend that the votes of Virginia's citizen soldiers be counted in the 2008 Presidential election.

Brian Moran has failed to take a position on criticizing the Democrat Appointed Majority that governs the Fairfax County Electoral Board regarding their recent decision to NOT ALLOW Virginia's citizen soldiers to vote. These soldiers that Moran refuses to fight for are currently fighting to defend Delegate Moran's inability to utter support for the right to vote of Virginia's Citizen Soldiers.

There is nothing on Delegate Moran's website criticizing the Fairfax County decision to reject militaty absentee ballots, link here:

There is nothing in Brian Moran's website that praises the legal work that Attorney General Bob McDonell has taken to overturn the Fairfax County Electoral Board's decision to reject military ballots, link here:

For the FOB's reading this (Friends of Brian), pass along the below textbook example of how a Virginia leader protects military interest in Virginia:

~ Office of Attorney General’s Advisory Opinion - Federal Law Preempts State Law ~

RICHMOND, VA - On Tuesday, October 28 the Virginia State Board of Elections reviewed and voted unanimously to accept the official advisory opinion of the Office of Attorney General regarding Federal Write-in Absentee Ballots (FWAB).

Last week the State Board of Elections was alerted to a possible conflict between state and federal law leading to the denial of approximately 100 FWABs. The Code of Virginia has stated since 2002 that all FWABs serving simultaneously as an absentee ballot application and an absentee ballot require both a witness’ signature and an address in order to be counted in the General Election. General Registrars correctly applied state law by denying these FWABs.

Out of concern that these votes from the military and overseas could not be counted under state law, the State Board of Elections and Delegate Bill Janis requested the Office of the Attorney General to conduct a detailed review of a conflict between state and federal law. The Office of the Attorney General released an opinion Monday night stating “that the provision of § 24.2-702.1(B) interpreted to require an overseas military voter submitting a FWAB to include the printed name and address of the person who signs the witness statement is preempted by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA).”

“I am pleased that we are able to count these votes, but also am pleased that our registrars followed the law,” said Jean Cunningham, Chair of the State Board of Elections. “Thank you to the Office of Attorney General for their extensive research, because of their review it allows SBE to count these votes under federal law.”

Breaking...OBAMA supporters Brain Moran and Creigh Deeds refuse to defend rights of citizen soldiers to vote

Posted by MAXIMUS

What do these three Democrats have in common: Delegate Brian Moran, Terry McAuliffe, Senator Creigh Deeds?

All three have REFUSED to speak out in favor of Attorney General Bob McDonnell's decision that the votes of Virginia's citizen soldiers can be counted in the election. Further,
Delegate Brian Moran, Senator Creigh Deeds, and Terry, "Hello My Honey, Hello My Baby, Hello My Ragtime Gal" McAuliffe all want to be the next governor of Virginia.

All three of these Democrats are keeping silent on this issue because they don't want the military ballots counted because they will go against Barack H. Obama close to 64% for McCain to 36% for B.H. Obama. What a way for the Democrats to start off their campaign for Governor!

Read what Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell has to say on the subject below:

Fairfax- Attorney General Bob McDonnell released a formal opinion today concluding that federal absentee ballots from overseas military voters lacking the printed name and address of a witness must be counted. The opinion affirms that federal law preempts state law, thus clarifying the state and federal statutes regarding the issue. The confusion centered over whether a state law requiring a witness’s printed name and address controls federal absentee ballots or the federal law governs this issue. The opinion was requested by Delegate Bill Janis (R-Henrico) and is attached to this release.

In the formal opinion the Attorney General finds, “It is…. my opinion that the applicable provision of Virginia law, § 24.2-702.1(B), interpreted to require an overseas military voter submitting only a Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot to include the printed name and address of the person who signs the witness statement is preempted by the provisions of the (federal) Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act. Finally, it is my opinion that general registrars may not reject a Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot submitted by overseas military voters for the November 4, 2008 federal election that does not include a printed name and address for the person who signs the witness statement…..”

Approximately 100 Federal Write-In Absentee Ballots have been set aside in Fairfax County pending a legal conclusion regarding the discrepancy between state and federal law. Additional Federal Write-In Absentee Ballots may also have been received in other jurisdictions. The Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot is most commonly used by members of the military who are stationed overseas and have not received a state absentee ballot. It is a means by which service members can be guaranteed a vote in federal elections.

A copy of this formal opinion was provided to the State Board of Elections this afternoon.

Is State Board of Elections Non-Partisan Any Longer? Part 2

In response to a FOIA request made to the State Board of Elections for all written communications, e-mail messages and dates of conference calls, between September 1 and September 25, regarding student registration, the following was discovered:

  • As students began arriving in August to begin the new school years at Virginia's universities and colleges, they were met with a significant and organized effort to convince them to register to vote in Virginia for this Presidential election.

  • These registration efforts appear to have been active in misleading students by telling them that declaring legal residence and domicile in Virginia – an absolute requirement to be qualified to vote (and thus to be able to register in Virginia) – would NOT cause them to have to apply for a Virginia driver's license or register a vehicle that they own here, as well as potentially more significant changes that a student would have to make. Virginia law is clear in regard to a driver's license and we believe as to other issues as well.

  • Many students, upon discovering the other obligations they were taking on by declaring themselves residents of Virginia, asked to have their applications for voter registration returned or destroyed.

  • At the same time, local registrars, well versed in the requirements for legally registering to vote in Virginia, sought to fulfill their responsibility to determine the eligibility of all new applicants, student or not. Local registrars began to receive phone calls, e-mail messages and visits from attorneys and others associated with the Obama campaign and related voter registration groups. These contacts appear to have been intended to intimidate registrars and their employees, with a goal of getting registrars to accept voter registration applications at face value and not try to actively determine if the applicant met the qualifications to be registered or not.

  • E-mail messages obtained under FOIA indicate that an attorney, who described himself as the contact for the Obama campaign for student voter registration issues, began pressing the State Board of Elections some time in August to contact registrars and advise them not to tell students about any potential obligations under Virginia law or local ordinance them might be taking on by declaring themselves a resident of Virginia.

  • It is also clear that, prior to Labor Day, most registrars in localities with significant (college) student populations felt confident in their responsibilities to use the State Board-approved questionnaire as a guide to determining if the student actually qualified to register in Virginia or not.

  • However, the Obama campaign continued to push for the State Board of Elections to clarify for registrars what they could and could not do.

  • On September 2, a meeting of the policy staff of the State Board of Elections was convened to try to determine what clarifications should be issued to registrars.

  • On September 3, James Alcorn of the SBE notified the Obama campaign attorney that the State Board of Elections would be "revising new guidelines" and distributing them that same week.

  • The proposed draft "clarifications" and accompanying changes to the SBE website appear to have been circulated to a group of registrars for comments. The final e-mail message, distributed to registrars on September 8 did not incorporate some of the more important comments, such as the fact that registrars are allowed by law to ask questions in determining an applicant's eligibility.

  • The release of this e-mail message apparently created some controversy because the following day Wayne Turnage, Governor Kaine's Chief of Staff, issued instructions directly to Secretary Nancy Rodriguez to draft a new letter to all registrars. General guidelines were given as to the letter's contents, with further instructions that the draft be circulated to several members of the Governor's staff for review. It is implied, but not clear from the e-mail trail, that the Chief of Staff and Secretary of the SBE had had a conversation about the matter prior to this e-mail directive. What was said we do not, of course, know.

  • A draft letter was prepared and apparently circulated because the Governor's Chief of Staff returned it by e-mail to Secretary Rodriguez with his personal edits. One of the edits – indicating that it was not up to the registrar to prove that an applicant for registration was a resident - was clearly of concern to the SBE staff, as noted in the e-mail trail. This edit was not included in the final letter issued to registrars.

  • It is clear that the Governor's office was right in the middle of these discussions and part of the process that pressured local registrars to be less active in determining the legal residency of applicants for voter registration.

  • In late September, the SBE began responding to inquiries about residency using the following language: "We recently updated this information to make clear that it is the student who is in control of the determination." This is a clear shift in policy and practice for the SBE, one made by the Governor's office and SBE staff, not in full public view as would have been proper.

Significantly, there is not one e-mail message during this period expressing concern over the Obama campaign's efforts to pressure students into registering, and very little support shown to registrars by either the SBE or the Governor's office.

In Part 3, we will begin looking at the documents obtained through FOIA.

Is State Board of Elections Non-Partisan Any Longer? Part 1

For years, Virginia has enjoyed a well-deserved reputation of having fair and clean elections. Virginians have had confidence in our electoral process because (with a few exceptions) our process is non-partisan, balanced and open.

Over the last few months, however, actions by State Board of Elections and the Kaine administration have started us down a different road, one on which policy decisions are made not on the basis of what's right, but on the basis of partisan politics.

Documents recently obtained through a FOIA request made to the State Board of Elections (SBE) are disturbing in their revelation of the involvement by both the Governor's Chief of Staff and an attorney representing the Obama campaign in a policy shift regarding student voter registration.

The underlying policy change has moved the determination of whether an individual, who is applying for voter registration, is qualified – at least insofar as whether they are a resident or not – from the General Registrar of each locality to the student. This policy change is euphemistically described by the SBE as a "clarification".

Lest the argument be made that no real change has taken place, we need look no further than the SBE's form letter response to inquiries about this subject in late September:

"We recently updated this information to make clear that it is the student who is in control of the determination."

Notice that last sentence again. It is no longer the Registrar who makes the determination of whether a student is actually a resident of Virginia. It is the student him/herself who is in control of making that determination. If that's just a clarification and not a major policy change, it's news to most Registrars.

So, back to the subject at hand. What happened that brought all of this about?

The next post in this series will walk you through what has been going on behind the scenes the last few months. It's not pretty and not at all what we have come to expect in the Commonwealth.

We Don't Terminate just because It's difficult

From the Wall Street Journal an inspiring Pro-life story that shows that we don't get rid of our responsibilities just because the alternatives are unsure; reward and payoffs of decisions made sometimes take time....From WSJ:

The Toughest Test
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- When Jennifer Carden was told that her unborn child had a rare and potentially fatal genetic condition two years ago, she was convinced that the diagnosis could be wrong and the baby might survive. Her doctors and husband disagreed. They tried, but failed, to persuade her to terminate the pregnancy.
The Cardens' baby, Parker, was born on Valentine's Day 2007, and doctors said he had a kidney disease that often kills infants in their first year. But Parker survived and is now 20 months old. He has poor language and motor skills and may never walk. Already hospitalized three times, Parker's medical odyssey has stretched the Cardens' finances and put a huge strain on their relationship....Thanks to ultrasound technology and the advent of amniocentesis in the U.S. about four decades ago, doctors have long been able to get basic information about the genetic and biochemical status of a fetus. Now, major strides in prenatal diagnosis are providing a clearer window into the womb, yielding extremely detailed data about the health of the fetus....This has allowed couples to prepare for the birth of a child with special needs, or, in some cases, intervene to improve the health of the fetus. It also means more couples face difficult choices about whether to continue a pregnancy....Many conditions diagnosed prenatally are rare and their genetic underpinnings still poorly understood. Most physicians have little or no genetics training. In some cases, doctors can diagnose an illness but struggle to predict how it might unfold or how long a baby will survive....More than eight years after the human genome was deciphered, advances in genetic knowledge are moving from lab to clinic, altering the practice of everyday medicine. In addition to expanded prenatal diagnosis, for example, most states have increased routine screening for rare genetic disorders in newborns. More couples with family histories of genetic ailments are getting tested before trying to have children of their own.
As such tests proliferate, pregnancy could become an increasingly medicalized -- and anxious -- experience. In an essay published last year in the medical journal Lancet, Evelyne Schuster, of the Office of Medical Ethics at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, wrote: "Prenatal genetic screening allows parents to take on the role of gene police, and to erect a roadblock at which they search and examine their children-to-be before birth."...On Oct. 1, 2006, when Jennifer Carden was 19 weeks pregnant, she went for a routine ultrasound at a hospital near her home in St. Clair Shores, Mich. The doctor told Mrs. Carden and her husband, Charles, that the fetus had enlarged kidneys and a portion of the brain was thickened....According to the Cardens, the doctor told the couple that their window to terminate was small -- just five weeks -- and recommended they see a specialist to confirm the diagnosis via another ultrasound and an amniocentesis. The diagnosis: A potentially fatal genetic disorder called autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease....Mrs. Carden, now 31 years old, contacted the ARPKD/CHF Alliance, a patient group based in Kirkwood, Pa. She learned that ARPKD is a rare disorder and poorly understood condition; genetic tests for it became available only a few years ago. The disorder occurs in about one in 20,000 individuals, and up to 75% of babies afflicted with it die in the first year after birth. After that, their chances of survival are good. But more than one-third need dialysis by the age of 10.
A year later, in a blog called "Our Family Whirlwind," Mrs. Carden recalled how she wrestled with the diagnosis: "It wasn't until I started reaching out and met other families who had children like Parker that things started to look up a little. I knew there were shades of gray and there had to be some hope for us."..The Cardens already had a tumultuous family life. Each had an 8-year-old son from a previous relationship, and Mrs. Carden's first boy lived at the Carden home. The Cardens also had a child of their own, Jackson, then a year-and-a-half old, who was recovering from major abdominal surgery needed to stave off a life-threatening intestinal blockage. A few months earlier, Mr. Carden had moved 150 miles away to Grand Rapids to take a sales-training job with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. His wife planned to join him later....The prospect of having another seriously ill child and the additional financial burden worried Mr. Carden. He suggested the couple terminate the pregnancy and try to have another child. When he first broached the idea during a kitchen conversation with his wife, Mrs. Carden flung his dinner plate into the sink and said: "I won't terminate. It's a marriage breaker."...Looking back at that difficult period, Mr. Carden, 32, says: "It was about the fear of having a baby we'd lose. I didn't know how our lives would be affected."..His wife, who is Catholic, had other reasons for wanting to see the pregnancy through. When she was 18 and unmarried, Mrs. Carden had an abortion. She says she still felt guilty about it, and that was another reason she didn't want to go through the procedure again...The pressure to do so, though, was intense. She later wrote on her blog: "I felt completely robbed of my pregnancy. Every ultrasound was, 'We don't know if [your] baby will be alive the next time we see you.' This continued every two weeks for the rest of my four months of being pregnant."..But Mrs. Carden became determined to see the pregnancy through. To save money, the couple let go their house cleaner and agreed to accept financial help from their families to pay for groceries. They also began to fight a lot more. If Mr. Carden phoned from work, his wife wouldn't answer or would hang up. She occasionally told him to not bother coming home at all...Mr. Carden worked late to avoid coming home. "We got to talking about separation and divorce," says Mrs. Carden...Her husband adds: "We were sleeping back-to-back."...The doctors scheduled a Caesarean section for the baby, because they felt the baby might not survive if allowed to go to term. About a month before the birth, Mrs. Carden says a pediatric specialist in kidney disease told the couple to "prepare for a rough ride," saying that the baby would likely be on a ventilator right after birth. On the drive back from that meeting, she called a local church to inquire about last rites for a newborn. She also called her insurance company to see if her yet-unborn child could be added to her life-insurance policy, so that the burial costs would be covered.
At 8:14 a.m. on Valentine's Day in 2007, while St. Clair Shores was under 10 inches of snow, Parker was born. Though the neonatal intensive-care unit was standing by, the baby's condition was stable. He was fed a special formula and, three days later, the Cardens took him home. That April, Mrs. Carden and the rest of the family joined her husband in Grand Rapids. "We had to learn to live with each other again," she says....In August 2007, Parker's condition began to deteriorate. His kidneys couldn't hold on to nutrients, so he'd get dehydrated and had to drink two liters of water a day. He rarely slept through the night. He picked up infections and was often on antibiotics. He would eventually need surgery to install a feeding tube.
On New Year's Day this year, Mrs. Carden wrote in her blog: "My marriage made it through another is our anniversary." Referring to her husband of four years, she added: "Through it all, we are still best friends and I have learned to lean on him when I need to -- not take it all on myself."..Parker was born on the same day as a child in Virginia who had also been diagnosed with ARPKD. Mrs. Carden learned about the boy through the patient group and stayed in contact with his mother. She called their sons' shared birthday a "Valentine bond." But in March, the boy in Virginia died. Mrs. Carden says it was a stark reminder about "the mortality of Parker's condition."...It remains far from clear what exact genetic ailment Parker has. The National Human Genome Research Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, is overseeing a clinical trial to better understand and seek a cure for an entire range of polycystic kidney diseases, which are among the most common inherited genetic conditions. The Cardens have agreed to participate once Parker is stable enough to make the trip to Bethesda, Md....Meral Gunay-Aygun, a pediatric geneticist at the NIH involved in the trial, says several patients in the trial had problems similar to Parker's at birth, such as breathing difficulty and large kidneys, but went on to do far better than doctors predicted. Many made it safely to adulthood; some didn't even require dialysis......"Advanced imaging means we can identify more patients prenatally," says Dr. Gunay-Aygun. "But the data we're using to determine these children's fate is outdated. There's the discrepancy."
Indeed, it turns out Parker doesn't have ARPKD, according to his current geneticist, Helga Toriello of Spectrum Health Hospitals in Grand Rapids. She says Parker doesn't have any of the classic signs of ARPKD -- high blood pressure, an abnormal liver and multiple cysts in the kidneys. She says it's unclear what Parker has....Prenatal diagnoses are subject to the interpretation of the person doing the ultrasound," says Dr. Toriello. "There are cases where things are missed or misinterpreted."...Still, in the past few months, doctors have told the Cardens that their son now has about 60% of his kidney function. Because Parker may never walk, his mother has ordered a wheelchair. His life is a series of appointments, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, feeding therapy and language therapy.
But every now and then, Mrs. Carden grows more hopeful. In August, she saw her son push himself up into a sitting position. It was the first time he'd managed it entirely by himself...."This is so big, big, big!!" she wrote on her blog. "He was a little surprised -- but every time he does it he looks at me and smiles."

MDD - Messiah Deficit Disorder

Messiah Deficit Disorder
By Oliver North
WASHINGTON -- On Wednesday, I was an unwilling eyewitness to a dramatic political event, and it made me wonder where we are headed as a nation. More on that in a moment. First, a little background....There is no doubt that leadership matters. The study of human history provides evidence that empires -- even entire civilizations -- rise and fall on the ideas, virtues and skills (or lack thereof) of great leaders. From Mesopotamia to Europe, those who chronicled the triumphs and failures of great leaders in the Western world measured success based on military prowess and territory conquered. Herodotus detailed how the Persian Empire, built by Darius, eventually succumbed to Alexander the Great in the fourth century B.C. That vision of leadership began to change in what is now Israel....Old Testament prophets described a Messiah -- a leader and savior who would deliver the Jewish people from their travails. For more than two millenniums, Christians have believed that the Messiah is Jesus of Nazareth and that at the appointed time, he will come again in triumph. Unfortunately, in the modern era, there have been many other leaders who perceived that they had messianic qualities that only they could provide....Napoleon, in the aftermath of the bloody French Revolution, described himself as "essential" to the future of France and was appointed dictator. The aftermath was a disaster for his countrymen and much of Europe....Adolf Hitler was elected by the German people and then given absolute power because he claimed that only he could "preserve the Aryan race." The result was a global conflagration that resulted in the deaths of more than 25 million...More recently -- from Idi Amin in Uganda to Pol Pot in Cambodia, Kim Jong Il in North Korea and Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe -- men have "led" their people to perdition after describing themselves as the only men capable of leading their populations through difficult times. Yet all their people were ultimately worse off...It is notable that until the 20th century, the American people managed to avoid selecting leaders who held messianic self-esteem. Neither George Washington nor Abraham Lincoln -- arguably two of this nation's greatest leaders through the toughest crises in our history -- described himself in such terms. In fact, the record of what they said and wrote is replete with humility....Not until Franklin Delano Roosevelt decided in 1940 that our country needed his "seasoned leadership" did any U.S. president even contemplate a third successive term in office. While FDR rose to become a great wartime leader, there is also little doubt that he amassed far more power in the office of chief executive than any of his predecessors. Roosevelt's authority was so great that his successor, Harry Truman, the modest man from Missouri, saw fit to endorse a constitutional amendment that limited presidents to two terms....Given America's history of limiting executive power in government -- if by no other means than term limits -- it is interesting to note how much hope some people now vest in such office. And it's not just the presidency....New York City, where Fox News Channel is headquartered, has a public law limiting the mayor to a tenure of two terms. Despite this ordinance, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, citing the current "economic crisis," insists that he should have a third stint in office. Though he was once a believer in term limits, he now claims, "Given the enormous challenges we face, I don't want to walk away from a city I feel I can help lead through these tough times."...That's messianic thinking. But apparently, the Big Apple isn't the only place it's happening....During Wednesday afternoon's rush hour, I was making my way home on the Dulles Greenway, when a phalanx of police motorcycles and cruisers stopped all traffic and ordered us to pull our vehicles off the highway and onto the shoulders. Over a loudspeaker, we were told to stay put until the Obama campaign convoy passed. They were on their way to a rally in Leesburg, Va.....Instantly, hundreds of people were out of their cars. Directly in front of me, a group of supporters -- evident by their bumper stickers -- jumped out with cameras, cell phones and banners. They began chanting: "The messiah! He's coming! Obama is coming!" The shouting only intensified as the candidate and his entourage -- motorcycles, police cars, black Secret Service Chevy Suburbans, and buses -- roared past us....What I found so disturbing was seeing so many of my countrymen who apparently think -- or believe or hope -- that the next president of the United States will save us from ourselves. Sen. Obama has said we cannot "wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for." He would do well to remember that unfulfilled expectations are the greatest cause of anger on the planet. That's true whether it is between husbands and wives, students and teachers, employers and employees or leaders and the led. He also might recall that humility is a virtue that has distinguished our greatest leaders.....What all this means to the future of this republic, I don't know. I'm a military historian, not a prophet. But I do know the first name of the Messiah. It's not Mike. And it isn't Barack, either.

McCain/Palin Rally for small business

I Attended a rally for small business today at Old Dominion Insulation with speakers Steve Forbes, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, Former Attorney General Jerry Kilgore and Rudy Giuliani. The segregates for John McCain got the crowd fired up to work hard in these final days of the campaign to get MCCain/Palin elected. Taxes on small businesses and the damaging effects Obama’s plan would have on the growth of small business was the key subject with both Steve Forbes and Rudy Giuliani taking the Democrat nominee to task. The keys were that taxes levied on small business are based on gross revenue (before costs, payroll etc.) that even those the bottom 38% in America don’t even pay taxes they will get a tax cut (in the form of a check or “credit”) and finally the socialistic nature of “spreading the wealth around” is so against the nature of Democracy, Free enterprise and the American way and that every man, Women and Child old enough to dream of ever owning a business, should reject an Obama Presidency from that alone.

On a happier note.....Coffee may mean loooove

From Reuters - It may seem unlikely, but simply clutching a warm cup of coffee can bring on a flood of warm feelings, U.S. researchers said on Thursday in a finding that suggests a strong link between physical and emotional warmth....."Physical warmth can make us see others as warmer people, but also cause us to be warmer -- more generous and trusting -- as well," said John Bargh, a professor of psychology at Yale University in Connecticut, whose research appears in the journal Science.......Bargh and Lawrence Williams of University of Colorado at Boulder ran a series of experiments to test the ties between physical temperature and emotional warmth.....They asked people to briefly hold a hot or iced coffee. Then they were given a packet of information about another person and asked to assess his or her personality traits....Those who had held the warm cup of coffee were far more likely to assign "warmth" as a personality trait than those who held the icy beverage.....In the second study, volunteers held ice packs or therapeutic heating pads as part of a product evaluation study. Then they were told they could receive a gift certificate for a friend or a gift for themselves.....Those who had held the hot pad were more likely to ask for the gift certificate, while those who held the frozen pack tended to keep the gift...."These very subtle and relatively simple cues are capable of having a meaningful impact on people's behavior," Williams said in a telephone interview...He said imaging studies suggest temperature information -- both physical and interpersonal -- are processed in a region of the brain known as the insular cortex....And he said these associations are likely formed in early childhood, noting that when an infant learns about love and physical closeness it typically happens while snuggling up to a parent's warm body...."Taking a warm bath. Drinking a cup of tea or coffee. Chicken soup. It's not haphazard that we have a preference for these types of experiences," he said....Williams said it is no accident that people in Western cultures looking to build new relationships often do it over coffee. "It's better than going out for ice cream," he said.

The love it's a wonderful thing...Um, I heading to Starbucks RIGHT NOW!!

She made it up and I wasted three posts talking about it

I knew the backwards "B" ,once I saw the picture, was a little strange but I don't know anyone personally who would makeup being attacked, that is just plain crazy... This is the act of a sick and stupid girl NOT a the blame where the blame is due on Ashley Todd not on McCain. For instance Tawana Brawley duped Rev. Al (IMHO) Al didn't put her up to it....geez political discourse in this country just keeps getting worse, we have to work to get the real McCain messages out there amonst all the lies and fabrication from opponents and then we have these distractions and stupid people making stuff, I'm genuinely mad about this.......whew... okay I'm better know..

Why do people make this crap up, we have enough issues to work out in this country

Whether it be Duke lacrosse players wrongly accused, Tawana Brawley, or this lady I will never understand the mind that thinks up these things (and thinks that they will not be found out)...cops are professionals at investigating this sort of thing aren't they? We have enough real campaign crackpots (on both sides) running around and causing real problems so we don't need people making up stuff..I don't care what side of the isle people are on, this stuff should just stop...the political discourse in this country continues to hit new lows....THE "B" IS BACKWARDS FOR GOD's Sake!!! If you're going to make something up at least get the story correct and the multilation consistant with how it would happen! geez! If I'm wrong on this I feel bad and am sorry but this, on reveiw, looks to not be on the up and up...

IBD/TIPP Tracking Poll: Day Eleven - McCain 43.7% Obama 44.8% Undecided 11.6%

How anyone (11.6%) could still be undecided with 11 days left I'll never knoe but McCain has cut into Obama's lead for a second day and is now just 1.1 points behind. The spread was 3.7 Wednesday and 6.0 Tuesday. The Republican is making headway with middle- and working- class voters, and has surged 10 points in two days among those earning between $30,000 and $75,000. He has also gone from an 11-point deficit to a 9-point lead among Catholics. Poll from IBD below (click on it to make it bigger):

Support McCain get Beat - even muggers have a political point of view

If you need another example of how insane this election is getting even muggers are giving the beat down on those who have a different political view. These types of incidences are happening more and more in a world that is devoid of reason and relies on emotion to make decisions. WTAE TV in Pittsburgh:

Police spokeswoman Diane Richard said the robber took $60 from Todd, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using a dull knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said...."She further stated that the male actor approached her from the back again and hit her in the back of her head with an object, she doesn't know what the object was, causing her to fall to the ground where he continued to punch her and kick her and threaten to 'teach her a lesson' for being a McCain supporter," Richard said......WTAE's news exchange partners the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Todd, who isn't familiar with the area, drove to a friend's house and together the pair located the Citizens Bank ATM at Liberty and Pearl where the attack happened and called police....Todd declined to comment to the Tribune-Review. Friends said she is in Pittsburgh volunteering for the McCain-Palin campaign....Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank's surveillance cameras....The robber is described as a dark-skinned black man, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 200 pounds with a medium build, short black hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing dark colored jeans, a black undershirt and black shoes....The Obama-Biden campaign released a statement, commenting on the attack. The statement said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."...The McCain-Palin campaign also released a statement saying, "The McCain campaign is aware of the incident involving one of its volunteers. Out of respect, the campaign won't be commenting. The campaign also confirms that Senator McCain and Governor Palin have both spoken to the woman."

Counting your Chickens before they Hatch

First from the Gaurdian:

Barack Obama began to speak openly and in detail about the post-election transition period from George Bush's presidency for the first time yesterday, opening himself up to charges of complacency...As most polls showed the Democratic candidate's lead over his Republican rival John McCain still growing, Obama held a meeting in Richmond, Virginia, to discuss with senior national security advisers the foreign policy challenges he would face as president. Bucking the trend, one poll, conducted by Associated Press, showed McCain cutting back Obama's 7% lead three weeks ago to 1%, on 44% to 43%. ...Obama's comments mark a significant change in the campaign, switching from rhetoric to a more presidential tone. ...Although Obama added the caveat that "I don't want to get too far ahead of myself," his comments reflected a sense of confidence that his campaign team is finding it hard to hide. At a press conference after the national security meeting, he said that although he had been almost single-mindedly focused on the economy, he had plans ready for Iraq, Afghanistan and other foreign policy problems. ...He spoke about having teams in place to deal with foreign and economic policy during the awkward transitional period between November 4 and the inauguration on January 20

Next from CBS 2 in Chicago: Election Day is less than two weeks away, and Chicago could be home to the biggest political party in the country. Construction is underway for a massive stage in Grant Park where Barack Obama could declare victory on election night....As CBS 2's Joanie Lum and Political Editor Mike Flannery report, tens of thousands are expected to gather before the stage on election night. One way or another, that huge crowd will witness history....The event would require massive security, but the Obama campaign promises that Chicago taxpayers will not have to foot the bill for police, fire and medical services that would be required for election night....Nov. 5, 1996, was actually the last election night when both major party candidates spoke publicly. In the close elections of 2000 and 2004, that did not happen. But this year, that may change, and preparations to accommodate a big crowd in Grant Park are already underway....A lot of work remains on platforms for speakers, risers for cameras and security barricades. Earlier Wednesday, construction crews at the south end of Grant Park were assembling what they said would hold a giant video screen for the election night gathering. ...No one really knows how many people will come to the lakefront's Grant Park on Nov. 4. Weather will likely play a role. It was warm and sunny a few days ago in St. Louis when Barack Obama drew an estimated 100,000 to the banks of the Mississippi River.

And Finally From the LA Times Obama just needs $10 more:
With $605 million already, Obama asks only $10 more from each of us Having hauled in a record $208,333 every hour of every day last month -- $150 million in all -- plus a few more unreported millions so far this month, Barack Obama is worried that he might come up short in the political money war with the John McCain-Sarah Palin ticket...Just to relieve himself of that $150 million before the polls open, Obama will have to spend $12.5 million a day. ...But he needs some more...And, according to an e-mail plea to supporters, tonight's the absolute deadline to donate $10 more and receive your special edition Official Obama-Biden car magnet....Having now collected more than $605 million altogether, the freshman senator shows no concern over the appearance of buying the presidency. Imagine for a moment the national political conversation that could be going on now if rich Republicans had raked in that much loot for one campaign....Obama's team is so well-funded and well-organized it has spread its political web into one-time red states, forcing McCain to defend them with his measly $84.1 million in federal funds....Obama aides privately profess profound concern that additional financial resources from the Republican National Committee could make the GOP ticket competitive in the closing days. And the Cincinatti Bengals are a real Super Bowl threat this year...."The race is deadlocked in a number of crucial battleground states," the urgent e-mail proclaims, "including Ohio, Missouri and Indiana. And we're neck-and-neck in Florida, North Carolina and Nevada.

The McCain Poll Comeback - AP Poll shows race neck and neck

From the AP : The presidential race tightened after the final debate, with John McCain gaining among whites and people earning less than $50,000, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll that shows McCain and Barack Obama essentially running even among likely voters in the election homestretch.
The poll, which found Obama at 44 percent and McCain at 43 percent, supports what some Republicans and Democrats privately have said in recent days: that the race narrowed after the third debate as GOP-leaning voters drifted home to their party and McCain's "Joe the plumber" analogy struck a chord. ...Three weeks ago, an AP-GfK survey found that Obama had surged to a seven-point lead over McCain, lifted by voters who thought the Democrat was better suited to lead the nation through its sudden economic crisis. ...The contest is still volatile, and the split among voters is apparent less than two weeks before Election Day...."I trust McCain more, and I do feel that he has more experience in government than Obama. I don't think Obama has been around long enough," said Angela Decker, 44, of La Porte, Ind. ...But Karen Judd, 58, of Middleton, Wis., said, "Obama certainly has sufficient qualifications." She said any positive feelings about McCain evaporated with "the outright lying" in TV ads and his choice of running mate Sarah Palin, who "doesn't have the correct skills." ....The new AP-GfK head-to-head result is a departure from some, but not all, recent national polls.....Obama and McCain were essentially tied among likely voters in the latest George Washington University Battleground Poll, conducted by Republican strategist Ed Goeas and Democratic pollster Celinda Lake. In other surveys focusing on likely voters, a Washington Post-ABC News poll showed Obama up by 9 percentage points, while a poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center had Obama leading by 14. A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, among the broader category of people registered to vote, found Obama ahead by 10 points. ...Polls are snapshots of highly fluid campaigns. In this case, there is a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points; that means Obama could be ahead by as many as 8 points or down by as many as 6. There are many reasons why polls differ, including methods of estimating likely voters and the wording of questions. ...Charles Franklin, a University of Wisconsin political science professor and polling authority, said variation between polls occurs, in part, because pollsters interview random samples of people. ..."If they all agree, somebody would be doing something terribly wrong," he said of polls. But he also said that surveys generally fall within a few points of each other, adding, "When you get much beyond that, there's something to explain." ....The AP-GfK survey included interviews with a large sample of adults including 800 deemed likely to vote. Among all 1,101 adults interviewed, the survey showed Obama ahead 47 percent to 37 percent. He was up by five points among registered voters. ...A significant number of the interviews were conducted by dialing a randomly selected sample of cell phone numbers, and thus this poll had a chance to reach voters who were excluded from some other polls. ...It was taken over five days from Thursday through Monday, starting the night after the candidates' final debate and ending the day after former Secretary of State Colin Powell broke with the Republican Party to endorse Obama. ...McCain's strong showing is partly attributable to his strong debate performance; Thursday was his best night of the survey. Obama's best night was Sunday, hours after the Powell announcement, and the full impact of that endorsement may not have been captured in any surveys yet. Future polling could show whether either of those was merely a support "bounce" or something more lasting. ...During their final debate, a feisty McCain repeatedly forced Obama to defend his record, comments and associations. He also used the story of a voter whom the Democrat had met in Ohio, "Joe the plumber," to argue that Obama's tax plan would be bad for working class voters...."I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody," Obama told the man with the last name of Wurzelbacher, who had asked Obama whether his plan to increase taxes on those earning more than $250,000 a year would impede his ability to buy the plumbing company where he works. ...On Wednesday, McCain's campaign unveiled a new TV ad that features that Obama quote, and shows different people saying: "I'm Joe the plumber." A man asks: "Obama wants my sweat to pay for his trillion dollars in new spending?"
....Since McCain has seized on that line of argument, he has picked up support among white married people and non-college educated whites, the poll shows, while widening his advantage among white men. Black voters still overwhelmingly support Obama. ...The Republican also has improved his rating for handling the economy and the financial crisis. Nearly half of likely voters think their taxes will rise under an Obama administration compared with a third who say McCain would raise their taxes.

Since the last AP-GfK survey in late September, McCain also has:

_Posted big gains among likely voters earning under $50,000 a year; he now trails Obama by just 4 percentage points compared with 26 earlier.

_Surged among rural voters; he has an 18-point advantage, up from 4.

_Doubled his advantage among whites who haven't finished college and now leads by 20 points. McCain and Obama are running about even among white college graduates, no change from earlier.

_Made modest gains among whites of both genders, now leading by 22 points among white men and by 7 among white women.

_Improved slightly among whites who are married, now with a 24-point lead.

_Narrowed a gap among unmarried whites, though he still trails by 8 points.

McCain has cut into Obama's advantage on the questions of whom voters trust to handle the economy and the financial crisis. On both, the Democrat now leads by just 6 points, compared with 15 in the previous survey. ...Obama still has a larger advantage on other economic measures, with 44 percent saying they think the economy will have improved a year from now if he is elected compared with 34 percent for McCain. ....Intensity has increased among McCain's supporters......A month ago, Obama had more strong supporters than McCain did. Now, the number of excited supporters is about even. ....Eight of 10 Democrats are supporting Obama, while nine in 10 Republicans are backing McCain. Independents are about evenly split....Some 24 percent of likely voters were deemed still persuadable, meaning they were either undecided or said they might switch candidates. Those up-for-grabs voters came about equally from the three categories: undecideds, McCain supporters and Obama backers. ...Said John Ormesher, 67, of Dandridge, Tenn.: "I've got respect for them but that's the extent of it. I don't have a whole lot of affinity toward either one of them. They're both part of the same political mess."

The Black Sphere

Came across a great new blog that I enjoyed reading today. It is one of the best written blogs I've come across in a long time and I would include it's writer in what this clog is all about...the Congtemporary Conservative. Since you all read this blog you should know what that is but if not, check out the post that explains it (you'll need to go back to November of '07 and search for it) I think I'll let you search for it :)

Why I am strongly supporting Randy Forbes - Helping to protect our communities

Continuing the series on why I am strongly supporting Randy Forbes - Helping to Our Communities

“If you want to measure the strength of America, look no further than the strength of her communities.”
- Congressman Randy Forbes

Building Local Roads, Bridges, and Transportation Infrastructure
Building, expanding, and maintaining a robust transportation network is key to the health of our communities and critical to the quality of life of its citizens. Congressman Forbes has worked to address traffic needs as a result of increased population and has secured millions of dollars in funding for local roads, bridges, bus terminals, and other transportation infrastructure across Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District.

Forming Citizen Advisory Boards on Critical Local Issues
Congressman Forbes believes in partnering with community residents to first listen and then act to address local issues. Through groups such as his Seniors Advisory Board, Veterans Advisory Board, Fort Lee Advisory Board, Farmers Advisory Board and Physicians Advisory Board, Congressman Forbes is building partnerships to take substantive action on local issues.

Equipping Community Law Enforcement and First Responders
Our communities are safest when our local law enforcement and first responders have cutting edge tools that give them a technological advantage to serve you better. Congressman Forbes has worked to bring federal dollars for technology improvements for local law enforcement such as laptop computers, in-car cameras, and hardware and software upgrades. He has also worked to secure funding to increase the effectiveness of local firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, new firefighting apparatus, emergency medical service programs, and fire prevention and safety programs. In short, those who put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of our communities are safer and better equipped.

Working for Federal-State-and-Local Partnerships to Address Illegal Immigration
Congressman Forbes has supported measures that would expand partnerships and information sharing between federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel to deter, detain, and deport illegal aliens convicted of crimes. Additionally, Congressman Forbes has worked to better address the strain illegal immigration is placing on local resources and taxpayer-funded programs.

Developing Relationships across Party Lines
Strengthening communities begins with strengthening relationships. Congressman Forbes has rejected the one-size-fits-all mentality of the federal government when it comes to dealing with local issues. Over the years that Congressman Forbes has represented Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District, he has placed his priority on developing relationships with local leaders – regardless of party affiliation – to bring increased economic development, leverage federal resources, and identify solutions to meet local challenges.

Cracking Down on Gangs and Partnering for Gang Prevention
Congressman Forbes has been a leader on Capitol Hill and in our communities in addressing gang violence. He has introduced federal legislation to aid prosecutors and law enforcement officers in breaking down gang structures in local communities and has partnered with local elected officials to secure funding to develop comprehensive prevention, suppression, and intervention strategies related to gangs and gang-related crimes.

Fighting Cyber-Crime and Identity Theft
Congressman Forbes has been a leader in equipping constituents with information and resources to fight cyber-crime and identity theft and has worked at the federal level to increase penalties for cyber-crime.

Preserving Our Local Historical Treasures
It only takes one generation to lose America's history. Congressman Forbes has partnered with local communities to preserve historical sites and to build and enhance local recreation and park lands.

Establishing Consumer Product Safety Standards
For many parents in today’s global marketplace it is an ongoing challenge to ensure the safety of the toys and products they are bringing into their homes. Congressman Forbes has supported legislation that would establish stricter consumer product safety standards and better recall information on the items that are being sold in our communities.

Keeping Technology Hassle-Free
Today’s individuals, families, and businesses run on technology. Congressman Forbes has worked to keep the Internet tax-free, to strengthen the national Do-Not-Call Registry, and to stop new taxes on cell phone usage.

Strengthening Small Businesses
Business belongs in the hands of America’s entrepreneurs, not the federal government. Congressman Forbes supports decreasing regulation and job-killing small business taxes that stifle our local economy. Additionally, Congressman Forbes believes in reducing the cost of health insurance to small business owners by providing more options like association health plans and health savings accounts.

Stopping Child Predators Online and in Our Communities
Today, keeping our children safe on the Internet is just as important as keeping them safe in the community. Congressman Forbes supports zero-tolerance policies towards child predators both on our streets and online.

Demanding Federal Government Performance Measures
Congressman Forbes has supported legislation to establish performance measures to determine ways to improve federal customer service to individuals in our local communities

Obama Blames FOX for everyone not liking him?

From OneNewsNow.COM AND Media Research Center (MRC)

A conservative media watchdog says it's outrageous that Barack Obama is blaming a major cable news service for costing him two to three points in the polls....In a recently published interview for the New York Times Magazine, the Democratic presidential candidate said: "I'm convinced that if there were no FOX News, I might be two or three points higher in the polls. If I were watching FOX News, I wouldn't vote for me, right? Because the way I'm portrayed 24/7 is as a freak!".....The Illinois senator continued, explaining that he is being typecast as "the latte-sipping, New York Times-reading, Volvo-driving, no-gun-owning, effete, politically correct, arrogant liberal. Who wants somebody like that?"...Do voters watch FOX News because they don't support Barack Obama?...Or do voters oppose Barack Obama because they watch FOX News?...Seton Motley, director of communications at the Media Research Center (MRC), says Obama's lashing out is evidence he cannot stand the idea that FOX News does not worship him like the majority of the mainstream media do...."He's gotten unabashed, loving coverage from all three broadcast networks, the vast majority of the cable news networks, and every print publication you can imagine," says Motley. "It has been wall-to-wall glowing coverage."...FOX News, says Motley, has the "audacity to report on [Obama] as he is and quote him verbatim" -- and somehow, adds the MRC spokesman, the presidential hopeful credits that for a downtick of two or three percent in his polling. "[For him to single-out FOX News is] just a staggeringly myopic view of the media and how he's been treated during his presidential run," he says....In contrast, Motley suggests that if not for the pro-Obama bias of The New York Times and the rest of the mainstream media, John McCain would be up 20 percent.

The longtime homosexual activist is also playing a prominent role in Barack Obama's White House bid....Linda Harvey, president of Mission America, says many parents would be frightened to know that one of Senator Obama's top homosexual fundraisers founded a group, namely GLSEN, which has recommended books that condone sex between men and teenage boys...."GLSEN believes that there should be homosexual clubs in K-12 schools, that children can self-determine their own sexuality at the grade-school level, that evidently it's fine for children to read and be exposed to many, many child corruption elements of sexuality, including the possibility of having sex with an adult," Harvey explains....Jennings' position in the Obama campaign, according to Harvey, either shows the senator does not have people vetted very well or actually supports teaching kids "the tactics of revolution."

Chase bank branches receive 30 letters laced with powder

From Yahoo News and the AP:

More than 30 letters containing a suspicious powder were mailed to Chase bank branches and federal banking regulators' offices in nine cities, authorities said Tuesday in what was being investigated as a first, if extreme, public backlash over the nation's financial crisis...Initial tests on the powder proved negative for poisonous or otherwise dangerous toxins, the FBI said. An FBI spokesman in Oklahoma, where eight letters turned up, said local preliminary assessments showed the powder was harmless calcium....Additional tests were being run on the letters Tuesday as officials zeroed in on possible suspects near Amarillo, Texas, where the letters were postmarked...."Most of these letters contain a powder substance with a threatening communication," the FBI said in a statement...."Even sending a hoax letter is a serious crime," the FBI said....A law enforcement official said the letters were mailed to Chase bank branches in or near Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Dallas, Denver, Newark, N.J., New York City, Oklahoma City and Washington. They all appear to be from the same source and began showing up at the banks on Monday, according to the official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly....A second law enforcement official, also speaking anonymously under the same conditions, said authorities were looking into whether the letters were sent in anger due to the cratering economy. Authorities would not release the text of the letters, but Gary Johnson, a spokesman at the FBI field office in Oklahoma City, said the threat was "based on past actions of the bank" and that the letters implied that the opener was going to die...U.S. Postal inspector JoJan Henderson confirmed that the letters appeared to be related. The U.S. Postal Service and state and local officials also were investigating....The letters were sent against a backdrop of eroding trust in U.S. financial institutions. The country is battling its worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s, where borrowing money has become much more difficult and a lot more expensive for consumers and businesses. The situation has roiled Wall Street and threatens to plunge the U.S. economy into a deep recession....One of the main goals of Washington policymakers is to restore confidence in the banking and financial system. To do so, the government has announced a flurry of drastic actions in recent weeks. The government is injecting billions into the country's biggest banks in return for partial ownership. It is also guaranteeing new bank debt and has boosted deposit insurance from $100,000 to $250,000....The crisis has left home foreclosures at record highs, has shriveled Americans' nest eggs and has catapulted unemployment....No injuries were reported after any of the letters were opened. Mary Jane Rogers, a spokeswoman for JPMorgan Chase & Co., said some employees, including a pregnant woman, were examined as a precaution

Campaigning by Intimidation

Campaigning by intimidation

Using intimidation tactics is yet another example of liberal fascism that is growing more bold each and every day. For the names Republicans and Conservatives get called and labelled it is the PC/Liberal fascist that will bring about the orwellian big brother government we all fear (or should fear) and it will stifle the american dream in this country by punishing success and stiffling true American ingenuity that make us the beacon of hope around the world. From the Tampa Tribune: Clearwater - CLEARWATER Frank Armstrong was preparing to go for a jog this morning when he noticed his Lexus – adorned with a McCain-Palin sticker - had been vandalized with obscenities and a burned American flag....Armstrong discovered the damage to his 2006 Lexus about 8:30 a.m. at his Sand Key condominium at 1400 Gulf Blvd. Clearwater police and Armstrong said someone etched obscenities and "KKK" into the paint, burned several areas of the car with cigarettes, set the flag on fire on his hood and may have urinated on the vehicle. Officers and Armstrong think the car was singled out because of its political stickers, including one reading "Nobama."..."This is definitely a hate crime," said Armstrong, a 41-year-old physician....Police estimated damage at $4,500. Police classified the incident as "criminal mischief/hate crime" and said it appeared "to be politically/racially motivated because the victim affixed a bumper sticker supporting the McCain campaign as well as an anti-Obama bumper sticker."...

Randy Forbers Versus his crazy "MoveOn.Org" Opponent

RTD Comparision of the cndidates and I'll take congressman Randy Forbes any day for his past leadership, thougtful voting record and common sense approach in solving the issues that face the Commonwealth and the United States:
My Ballot
House 4th District

Rep. J. Randy Forbes (R)
Representative of Virginia's Fourth Congressional District

Andrea Miller (D)
Corporate Trainer

My Notes: Cancel Edit
Rep. J. Randy ForbesAndrea Miller
What is your position on the federal bailout to shore up the U.S. financial system?

Rep. J. Randy Forbes: I’ve heard from thousands of constituents who are both scared and outraged at the financial crisis facing our nation and the subsequent response by legislators in Washington. Taxpayers are worried about their retirement accounts, business investments, and college savings. At the same time, they are outraged that taxpayers have been asked to shoulder the cost of irresponsible actions of businesses and government. People know things need to change. I voted against the $700 billion bailout and have posted a list of solutions on my website, These are solutions that restore the flow of credit, protect our citizens’ life savings, and help determine the root causes of this crisis to reform Wall Street and Washington and prevent us from being here again.
Andrea Miller: I am against the bailout for the U.S. financial system because it did not provide enough regulations to prevent the same situation from occuring again. Further the merger of Bank of America and Merrill Lynch is a recipe for additional disaster since we are again joining speculative banking with asset banking. Can we learn nothing from history? The entire reason that Glass-Steagall exists was to prevent the collapse of the banking industry that we experienced in 1929-30 from ever happening again. Additionally, the golden parachute(s) provided to the executives of the bailout companies allowed them to loot the money from their shareholders and leave the shareholders and taxpayers holding the bag.

Do you support a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq? If so, when?

Rep. J. Randy Forbes: I support the withdrawal of troops from Iraq that mirrors a stability in the region that protects national security and our troops on the ground. The recent successes of the surge have moved us significantly closer to such a withdrawal and can be directly attributed to our men and women in uniform and their families. As Ranking Member of the Readiness Subcommittee, I worked to provide our troops with the equipment they needed to make these successes possible. Before 2000, our Army had inadequate body armor; today, there are more than 1 million sets. Where the Army once had 1,300 Up-Armored Humvees, there are now more than 18,000. I’ve supported increased GI benefits, time with families, veterans benefits, and pay for our troops. This support – coupled with my insistence that the Iraqis pay for their own reconstruction efforts - directly contributes to our successes in Iraq and Afghanistan and places our troops on a path to an earlier return home.

Andrea Miller: Yes, I support a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq. We are currently spending $10 million per month of borrowed money. The withdrawal timetable must be as immediate as possible. How do you end an irresponsible war? You stop fighting. When do you end an irresponsible act? As quickly as possible.

One of the first orders of business must be cancelling all the contracts with Halliburton, KBR and the other war profiteers. Next the war profiteers must be prosecuted and the American taxpayers must have their money returned (estimated $150 billion)....The American embassy in Iraq should be turned over to the Iraqis; we cannot afford to pay the $1 billion annual costs of maintaining the embassy.
Should President Bush’s tax cuts be made permanent? Why or why not?

Rep. J. Randy Forbes: Especially at a time when our nation is facing a struggling economy, increasing energy costs, rising tuition bills, and increasing food prices, making our current tax cuts permanent will put more money back in the pockets of hardworking Americans and will restore needed predictability in our economy. I have cosponsored legislation that would permanently enact the child tax credit, marriage penalty relief, college tuition deduction, state and local sales tax deduction, teacher expense deduction, and would repeal the estate tax. Additionally, I have been awarded the “Hero of the Taxpayer Award” for my support of a simplified and streamlined tax code that will restore permanent predictability in our tax laws and avoid the stop-and-start tax policies that make family and business financial planning difficult. We must reform our complicated system of taxation that is currently more than 50,000 pages of tax code laws and regulations.

Andrea Miller: The Bush tax cuts for the wealthy should be repealed immediately. Trickle-down economics has not worked since nothing has trickled down except bad debt. The entire concept behind taxes is that those who have achieved the most contribute some of it to maintain infrastructure. If the wealthiest pay no taxes and the entire tax burden must be born by those with little wealth, we see the results today. The rich (prior to the Wall St. meltdown) got richer and our infrastructure collapsed a little more each year.

What is your position on lifting the federal moratorium on drilling off Virginia’s coastline?

Rep. J. Randy Forbes: To reach energy independence we need to pursue a comprehensive energy plan that increases domestic oil supply through drilling, expands conservation, and explores cost-effective alternative energy. I’ve voted to increase domestic oil supply 12 times in the past two years, including 4 times for environmentally-sound offshore drilling. If America fails to take advantage of our offshore resources we face the likelihood that other foreign nations like China will. I am emphatic in ensuring that Virginia receives a share of profits from drilling off our coastline that could be used to fund local schools, build roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure, and support our local community needs. I’ve also supported policies that increase conservation, like increasing CAFÉ standards for cars and trucks and have introduced the nationally acclaimed New Manhattan Project for Energy Independence, which addresses fuel efficiency, solar power, biofuels, and nuclear energy.

Andrea Miller: We should never drill off the Virginia coastline. Virginia is in the hurricane zone. The Virgnia Beach tourism industry and fishing industry cannot be placed in jeopardy. We also cannot afford to lose another food source. Furthermore drilling would not produce any oil for at least 10 years. The DEA has stated that offshore drilling would only lower gas prices 2 to 4 centers per gallon. The risk far outweighs the benefit.

In 2005 we saw the damage and devastation Katrina did to the oil rigs in the Gulf. What are your views on global warming?

Rep. J. Randy Forbes: As regular consumers of our natural resources, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of our environment. We need to seek a ‘double bottom line’ of what’s good for our environment and what’s good for our economy. We can do this by taking a scientific approach to reducing our environmental impact. Projects like the New Manhattan Project that I have introduced allow us to find solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing our environment – increasing fuel efficiency, developing solar power and biofuels, and developing nuclear energy. These efforts will provide the ultimate protection to our environment. Through investments in scientific discovery, we can resolve the conflict between the environment and our economy and truly find a double bottom line to protect our economy and protect our environment.

Andrea Miller:
In order to survive we must have clean air and clean water and be able to grow food. I believe greenhouse gases have contributed to global warming and we must reverse the effect. I support clean, renewable fuels to generate power such as wind, solar and tidal. Since automobile emissions also contribute to global warming, I support alternatives to petrochemicals. In the 4th district we have the unique opportunity to become the home of the new multi-billion dollar bio-fuel industry. We can produce cellulosic ethanol from agricultural waste (peanut, tobacco, forestry, corn). We can also grow switchgrass and produce 11,500 gallons of ethanol per acre.

What are your views on abortion?

Rep. J. Randy Forbes: I have never wavered in my support of policies that protect America’s unborn. Life is precious and it deserves our respect and protection. As a public servant, I feel that I have a special obligation to protect our nation’s most vulnerable citizens. As I did during my tenure in the Virginia Senate and House, I will continue to be a strong advocate for America’s unborn. Additionally, I have introduced legislation that bridges the political divide over embryonic stem cell research and prioritizes funding for research programs that use stem cells that are ethically obtained.

Andrea Miller: I am pro-choice. Not all people agree on when human life really begins. Roe vs. Wade guarantees that if a woman chooses to terminate her pregnancy, she can do so in a safe, medical environment. Outlawing abortion will not stop the practice. It will merely send it underground and return us to the world of back alley quacks who prey on women who cannot afford (money or health) to have a child. Prior to Roe vs. Wade many women died or were accidentally sterilized due to botched back-alley abortions. We need to look at our intent....If we are unwilling to provide healthcare and childcare, why are we so desperately trying to force more women and their children into poverty. Many unmarried women choose to have their babies while many unmarried women under pressure from their husbands seek to terminate an unplanned and unaffordable pregnancy.

An estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants are in the U.S. What, if anything, should Congress do?

Rep. J. Randy Forbes: Our nation was founded by immigrants and continues to be sustained and improved with new legal immigrant citizens. However, we are a nation of laws and our immigration policies should reflect a respect for the rules of our nation. Illegal immigration drives up the cost of health care at our hospitals, causes overcrowding in schools, drains public services, and strains our criminal justice system. We need to close immigration loopholes and enhance our national security by staffing and securing our borders. Equally important, we need to reject amnesty and instead rework our currently backlogged and ineffective legal immigration process so that our nation can welcome new citizens legally and safely.

Andrea Miller: Congress must change our trade policies from free trade to fair trade. The massive influx of undocumented workers is coming from our southern border which says you must look at why only from the south and not the north. The difference between Canada and the southern border is our trade policy. By moving American jobs to foreign countries, we broke the back of unions and lowered the pay for American workers. By producing cheap goods in Mexico and South America at low wages with no safety or environmental concerns, we got inexpensive products and simultaneously destroyed local business, farms and markets. While $5/hour is a low wage, it is substantially higher than $5/day...If we adjust our trade policies so that we protect the environment and workers there will be less incentive to relocate out of the U.S. Companies that do relocate will pay a local living wage so the incentive will be to remain at home.

An estimated 47 million Americans lack health insurance. What, if anything, should Congress do?

Rep. J. Randy Forbes: America needs a new health care future – one that places the decisions of patients and their doctors above health insurance companies and Washington bureaucrats. We need a health care system focused on preventative care, competition among health insurance companies and prescription drug companies, and access and affordability for all Americans from our youngest children to our elderly and including all those suffering from chronic illnesses. Covering America’s uninsured will reduce health care costs for all Americans. I have supported SCHIP to cover uninsured children, allowing individuals to purchase health insurance plans across state lines, and policies that keep health coverage in the hands of patients, not Washington bureaucrats. I have supported association health care for small business employees, introduced legislation to increase funding for medical research and development and have drafted a bill to protect individuals from predatory health insurance cancellations.

Andrea Miller: Congress should pass single payer universal healthcare immediately. By providing our citizens with health care (medical, dental, vision, pharmacy and mental health), people would psychologically be better able to deal with the massive debt we have incurred with the bailout. Additionally, this healthcare plan would now prevent families from losing their home because of catastrophic illness and an inability to pay healthcare bills.

What do you consider the No. 1 issue facing Virginia?

Rep. J. Randy Forbes: Virginians are facing shrinking retirement accounts and home equity, and rising energy and college tuition costs. We need to focus on creating long-term solutions that rebuild our economy – starting by strengthening the economic health of our families and everyday circumstances that shape our citizens’ personal economic outlook. These circumstances are the price of gas, the total in the savings account, the medical bill, the credit card balance, and the tax assessment. We need bipartisan partnerships to bring new industry and job growth to Virginia’s Fourth District, continue the growth of Fort Lee and other economic generators, reduce the tax burdens on the middle class, reform government spending, strengthen small businesses, and encourage savings and financial literacy. We need to work hand-in-hand to place consumer safeguards in our mortgage lending and banking industries, take bold action on energy and gas prices, and increase access and affordability of health care.

Andrea Miller: The economy in the form of foreclosures, job loss, lack of health care and fual costs. As companies move overseas or cannot find credit for cashflow, jobs are lost. When families lose jobs, first health care then eventually homes are lost. The real solution to the Wall Street mess was to help stabilize foreclosures so that the mortgage portfolios would retain more of their value. To stop the foreclosures, people must be able to work. Infrastructure jobs and green energy jobs are the solution to our 21st century economic problems, not bailouts.
