Chesterfield lawyer defends the alleged 9/11 planner, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed

Prescott L. Prince, A lawyer in Chesterfield as the dubious task of being the lead defense attorney for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed or "stand-by" attorney as it were. From the Times Dipatch:

Chesterfield County lawyer Prescott L. Prince has a record of representing some of the area's worst criminals in his two-decade legal career in Richmond. But his life's work could be redefined by a single case of historic proportions: defending the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks....He's embracing the challenge, not dreading it....Prince's improbable journey as lead defense counsel for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, perhaps the world's most notorious terrorist behind Osama bin Laden, began a little more than a year ago when the 53-year-old Navy Reserve captain was called to active duty....Thinking he would probably get a desk job in Washington, Prince and his wife, Judy August, also an attorney, were more than a little surprised when he was sent to Iraq for six months as a Navy legal adviser for detainee operations....Basically he rejected the jurisdiction of the court," Prince said. During his arraignment June 5, Mohammed advised the court he wishes to represent himself, which would essentially leave Prince as Mohammed's "standby" attorney and legal adviser. Yet Prince must still prepare a defense should Mohammed change his mind or is later ruled incompetent to act as his own attorney..."In essence he said that accepting counsel was contrary to his view of Islamic law, because that would be equivalent to accepting jurisdiction of a court, which he considered improper."

A proper defense is one of those not so easy parts of democracy that makes this country so great....just like the 1st amendement that allows all speech and religous expression to be exercised without prejudice (whether we agree with it or not) so does the sixth amendement guarantees the Right to counsel, no matter the convict or crime. In this case of a terrorist responsible for over 3,000 deaths and the pesonal be-heading of a WSJ jouralist, we must go to pain staking efforts to insure that we, as Americans, do not loose our diginity and democratic mindset when dealing with these barbarians thus we surrender to become them and they evitably win the war on terror.

Didn't John Adams himself defend the perpetrators of the Boston Massacre?
