Let’s be Independent, Together

Will the Independent Redistricting Commission really be Independent? As Senate Bill 38 creating an independent redistricting commission, moves through the General Assembly with the endorsement of Governor Kaine and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling the question remains will a bipartisan committee actually be independent of General Assembly political pressures when making the hard choices. The major loophole that virtually makes this commission useless is that the General Assembly the final say over the boundaries of congressional and legislative districts. Also, the accountability of the commission id lacking since the members are appointed and not elected.
